Present-day Sevierville was inhabited by Native American tribes long before the city adopted its current name. It wasn't until 1794 that Sevier County was established in honor of John Sevier, following the creation of Sevierville the following year. During the American Civil War, the town suffered at the hands of both Union and Confederate supporters who moved through town, advancing their cause. As the war ended, confederates were forced to relocate as the city managed its recovery.

During the 1870s and 1880s, Sevierville grew considerably. It welcomed grocery stores, hotels, and a sawmill. Tourism also increased due to the rumored healing qualities of its mountain springs. 

Sevierville did not incorporate until 1901. The Smoky Mountain Railroad was completed to transport passengers between Knoxville in Sevierville, improving the area's economy. 

Once the Great Smoky Mountains National Park opened in 1934, once again Sevierville began hosting tourists on their way to and from the Park. Some notable sights in town and its surroundings include-

• Dollywood- one cannot speak of attractions near Sevierville without mentioning the world-famous Dollywood in nearby Pigeon Forge. Whether you are a fan of Dolly Parton or not, the amusement park is worth a visit
• Sevier County Courthouse- part of the National Register of Historic Places, it was built in the 1840s
• Harrisburg Covered Bridge- it crosses the Little Pigeon River and was completed in 1875
• Waters House- a Victorian home built in 1895 and designed by African-American Lewis Buckner, who played a prominent role in building many of the older structures in the area
